Workshops

Registration | Current Schedule

Workshops are one-time sessions introducing participants to a specific topic. They change seasonally to reflect the cycle of the herbal year. Consisting of lecture and demo or hands-on activities, Herb Center staff and local guest instructors strive to bring a practical and balanced learning environment to those interested in using herbs in everyday life.

Registration is required at least 48 hours in advance. We reserve the right to cancel classes due to limited enrollment. Workshops are non-refundable.

Herbal Hard Candy
Everyone loves a little something sweet! In this class we will learn the basic technique for making hard candies at home, and explore how to kick it up a notch with herbal infusions. Come experiment with flavors and learn how to make an easy gift for your favorite sweetie!

Join us for an informal evening of tea and herbal discussion. We will sample a featured tea or blend, and enjoy light refreshment with an herbal twist, spending the hour discussing whatever herbal topics the group is interested in. Tea circle will meet on the third Thursday of each month.

​Aromatherapy 101
Have essential oils, but don’t know what to do with them? Come to a relaxed, informative class to learn safety, dilutions, applications, and recipes. We will discuss how to research any essential oil you may have and how to use them in a safe, effective manner. Bring one or two essential oils you don’t use and Deborah will inspire you to become familiar with that oil and aware of its many uses. Items will be supplied for you to make a blend with the essential oil(s) you bring.

Become a Beekeeper!
Learn how to become a beekeeper! Our intro to Beekeeping workshop is suitable for both beginners and those with some beekeeping experience. Discover how to get started in beekeeping. Learn about the science and history of the hive. Once you complete the class you will be ready to start your own beekeeping experience. Participants receive: “Bee-sentials: A Field Guide” book, hand-outs, memberships to Ohio State Beekeepers Association for 2017 and Urban Beekeepers of Central Ohio for 2017.

Pressed Flowers & Poured Herbal Candles
Who doesn’t love the scent and beauty of flowers? In this class we will complete an easy craft project that teaches you how to capture both! First we will explore techniques for making dried pressed flowers, and then we will combine those with aromatic essential oils to create candles that put the essence of flowers in a jar! Participants will leave with a small Mason jar candle, and the knowledge of how to make more at home.

Learn how simple salves, essential oils, liniments, and tea bags can find a place next to your bandages in your first aid kit.

​Herbal Planting for Pollinators
Herbs are good for pollinators too! Gardeners are very concerned about bees and butterflies these days, and with good reason. This class will outline what herbs work best to support pollinator populations, and talk about good garden design to encourage all wildlife! Afterwards we will create a pollinator seed bomb to put in your yard.

​Spring Plant Swap
Join us for our beginning-of-season, clear-out-space-in-your-gardenbeds plant swap! Categories will include bulbs, hostas, peonies, dahlias, daylilies, succulents, and anything else that is taking over your garden space. Drop-off/set-up will start at 2pm, with the swap starting promptly at 2:30. This event is free, but please RSVP to the Herb Center to participate. Open to all ages.

Experiencing the Sensory Garden
Join us for this new family series in which we venture outdoors to explore the herb garden with all of our senses through games and crafts. This class is suited for ages 3-8 and all abilities. Come dressed in clothes suited for the weather, and that you don’t mind getting a little scuffed.

Wild Herb Walks
Beneficial herbs and plants are all around us, and often overlooked as simply “weeds.” Join us on a walk in and around the Parks of Gahanna. Take home the knowledge of what you may be able to discover growing in your back yard! Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to venture on foot. We will also discuss proper wildcrafting etiquette. Pre-registration by Friday noon is required. Meet at the entrance signboards at each park.

Brooke Sackenheim enjoys teaching people about the traditional medicinal uses of herbs. She has over 10 years experience with herbs, studying with many well-known herbalists and using them in her daily life.
