    The Gahanna Division of Police is committed to providing the best possible police services to you, our customers.     Internal affairs matters and the maintaining of professional standards within the Division are the responsibilities of Lieutenant Jeff Spence. Lieutenant Spence is available to address your concerns by email at jeff.spence@gahanna.gov, or he may be contacted by telephone at (614) 342-4240.

    The Gahanna Police Division consists of 54 full-time officers, 27 reserve officers, seven part-time officers, eight dispatchers and three civilian clerks. The Division also maintains specialized teams to better investigate crimes and respond to abnormal situations. These teams include the Standards and Investigation Bureau, Community Oriented Police and the Tactical Response Unit.
    Standards and Investigation Bureau (SIB)
    The Standards and Investigation Bureau (SIB) encompasses all investigative resources within the Division and is under the command of Lieutenant Jeff Spence. Investigators within the Bureau are directly supervised by Sergeant Monty McCormick. The Bureau is comprised of nine investigators that are divided into two sections, comprised of general assignment detectives and the Special Investigations Team (SIT). General assignment detectives are further divided into the following areas of expertise: property crimes (burglary, vandalism, auto theft) ; sexual abuse/assault; crimes against persons (robbery, felonious assault, homicide); economic crimes (forgery, fraud, identity theft), juvenile crimes, hostage/crisis negotiations and court liaison activities. Investigators work closely with other federal, state, and municipal law enforcement agencies to better serve the community and increase the effectiveness of the Division.



    The Special Investigations Team (SIT) is responsible for undercover narcotics and vice investigations, underage liquor sales, tracking registered sexual offenders within the community, processing of asset forfeiture cases within Federal and State Courts, and criminal intelligence matters.

    Other duties of the Standards and Investigation Bureau include: Community Oriented Policing (COP), department training, legal compliance, records management, internal affairs, professional standards and special projects.


    Community Oriented Police (COP)
    The Community Oriented Police (COP) are community liaison officers who interface with the Gahanna community to quickly respond to constituent issues and to help maintain the police division's relationship with the community. Currently two officers are assigned to the COP program. The officers assigned to the program are COP team leader John "Joe" Estepp (left), and Dean Blamer (right).
    Tactical Response Unit
    The Tactical Response Unit (TRU) has existed for over 9 years and is commanded by Sgt. Jim Graham. The team consists of the best of the best Gahanna Police Officers and participates in aggressive, tactical training every month. The TRU has also won many tactical awards including multiple firearms and physical fitness awards. TRU members must qualify in very demanding, semi-annual firearms and physical fitness qualifications to maintain their status on the team.
