Water Safety Tip of the Week Reach or Throw, Don’t Go! If you ever find yourself in a situation where someone around you is drowning or struggling to swim, quick action can save a life. First, call for help. Get the attention of the Lifeguard-on-Duty if there is one. If not, call 911. Next, look for something that you can reach out to the person or something that you can throw to them. Things like tree branches, pool brushes, or even an arm or leg can extend your reach from a safe place. Things like pool floaties or inflatable toys, noodles, or ring buoys can be thrown to someone in trouble to help keep them above the water. Never go in after someone without proper equipment and training. Someone who is distressed or actively drowning can grab on to you and pull you down with them. Remember, Reach or Throw, Don’t Go!
