Mental Health Exercises from our EAP ProviderWhen life feels overwhelming, taking a few minutes to reset can make a big difference. Here are some simple and effective decompression exercises from Bronson HelpNet to help you regain focus. Ground Yourself with Deep Breathing Step 1: Find a quiet spot. Sit comfortably or stand with your feet flat on the ground. Step 2: Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 seconds, filling your lungs. Step 3: Hold your breath for 4 seconds. Step 4: Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6–8 seconds, focusing on releasing tension. Step 5: Repeat this cycle 4–5 times, keeping your focus on your breath.
- Use the "5-4-3-2-1" Grounding Technique
Step 1: Engage your senses to bring your attention to the present moment. Step 2: Look around and name five things you can see. Step 3: Identify four things you can touch. Step 4: Notice three things you can hear. Step 5: Find two things you can smell (or imagine comforting scents). Step 6: Acknowledge one thing you can taste (or focus on your breath if taste isn’t relevant).
- Release Any Physical Tension
Step 1: Sit or stand upright. Tighten your shoulders and clench your fists as hard as you can. Step 2: Hold this tension for 5 seconds. Step 3: Exhale and release all tension immediately, letting your shoulders drop. Step 4: Repeat 2–3 times, paying attention to the sense of relief as you relax.
- Practice a Quick Mental Reset
Step 1: Close your eyes and imagine a calm, happy place—such as a beach or forest. Step 2: Visualize yourself in that space, focusing on the sights, sounds, and smells. Step 3: Spend 1–2 minutes in this mental "escape," allowing yourself to feel at peace.
