Bronson Helpnet - Summer TipsAs spring transitions into summer, rising temperatures can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Staying aware and helping others is key to community safety. Vulnerable groups to check in on include: - Pregnant people, who are more prone to overheating due to hormonal changes and increased body strain
- Children, especially infants, who may not be able to express discomfort or regulate temperature effectively
- Older adults, who may have a reduced ability to sense and respond to heat
- People with chronic conditions like diabetes, which can affect hydration, or Parkinson’s, which may impact sweating and body temperature control.
Simple but effective ways to help: - Call or visit friends, family or neighbors to check if they’re managing the heat well.
- Offer your home as a temporary, cool shelter if someone’s home has become too warm, especially during heat advisories.
- Share resources, like an extra fan, window AC unit or even cold water and ice packs.
- Encourage visits to air-conditioned public spaces, such as libraries, shopping centers or community centers.
- Call 211 to locate free cooling centers—these are safe, climate-controlled spaces open during extreme heat events.
