Gahanna Energy Plus (CCA)

AEP Ohio Capacity Charges

Beginning in June 2025, ALL AEP customers statewide were impacted by increased capacity charges. The City's Gahanna Energy Plus program has a guaranteed fixed rate of $0.09756 per kWh (100% renewable energy) for the next 12 months. If you are already participating in Gahanna Energy Plus and wish to continue receiving this reduced rate, you have nothing more to do. If you wish to be removed from the program, you can call AEP Energy Customer Care at (877) 648-1937 and request to be returned to the standard rate offering ($0.01052 for July 2025). If you are not enrolled in Gahanna Energy Plus but wish to be, you can call the number above and ask to be enrolled.

AEP capacity charges are anticipated to increase over the next several months. Please be aware of how this increase will impact your utility bill and what your options are to reduce these charges. To shop for your own electric supplier, visit EnergyChoice.Ohio.gov/.

Energy Choice Ohio

City Council and the Administration have taken steps to reduce energy costs for Gahanna residents by selecting Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC) as our partner for a community choice energy aggregation program, now known as Gahanna Energy Plus. The City is a member community of SOPEC and residents will see information regarding community choice aggregation programing in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more information.

What is Community Choice Aggregation?

Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) or Municipal Aggregation, is a powerful tool that communities can use to reduce energy cost to their residents while taking steps to achieve their economic and environmental goals. These programs leverage local purchasing power and decision-making to secure electricity from specific sources, at a specific price. These programs can help communities with greenhouse gas reduction goals by choosing renewable energy as their source of electricity.

What Steps has Gahanna Taken Towards CCA?

City Council and Administration engaged in extensive meetings and informational sessions on municipal aggregation and other sustainability efforts. These discussions led to Council passing a resolution authorizing participation in Power a Clean Future Ohio (PCFO), demonstrating Gahanna leadership’s commitment to reducing pollution and carbon emissions and to pursuing best practices on revitalizing the municipal aggregation program.

Power A Clean Future Ohio

To further the pursuit of establishing a Community Choice Aggregation Program the City released a Request for Information to a variety of energy aggregators.   Following a review of four responses to the RFI, City Council passed a resolution pledging to become members of Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC) with the intention of joining 29 Ohio communities  that partner with SOPEC for Community Choice Aggregation programing.

What is an Opt-out Community Choice Aggregation Program?

In an Opt-out Community Choice Aggregation Program, authorized by Gahanna voters in 2000, all eligible AEP Ohio customers will automatically be opted into the CCA program.  At any time during the contract period, residents can choose to opt-out of the program and be returned to AEP Ohio's base energy supply offering.  Residents who are already enrolled in an aggregation plan with their own energy provider, will not be automatically enrolled in the CCA program.  Residents can join the City initiated program at anytime after the initial offering at no charge.   Please see the complete CCA Frequently Asked Questions below for additional details.
